Jang minseung + Jung jaeil
Jang minseung + Jung jaeil, a media artist group comprising artist and designer Jang Minseung and composer Jung Jaeil, experiments with sensory experiences that contemporary art and popular music fail to convey.
Having played in bands together and worked on film scores since their teens, Jang and Jung go beyond the sentimental recording of sound visualisation to create synesthetic viewer experiences by way of specific places, memories and media devices. Their work includes elements of art, music, theatre and film, eliciting fleeting impressions without being confined to any particular realm. Jang and Jung’s shared memories are the foundation of their work and the force that binds them together; these memories have produced a series of public and continuously refined works.
Since showing 〈Spheres Part 1〉 in Mullaedong, a lyric play-like work about place and memory based on GPS and applications in 2011, the duo has continued experimenting with various boundary-defying methods and media, producing works such as 〈The Moment〉, a recreation of a dramatic, sensation-amplifying situation 〈Sanglim〉, which prompted a huge turning point in public art by being produced entirely from temporary and immaterial elements and 〈Bright Chamber〉, a work that maximised spatial experience through light and sound alone, using resonance in the huge Exhibition Room 6 at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul.
5) SECRETS OF RUSSIA at KIASMA (Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki) 2012.
A collaboration with traditional Russian manufacturers. In 2011 Aamu Song and Johan Olin set on a journey to explore Russian manufacturing secrets. The travels, which took us from Moscow to Urals, into Siberia and to the Caucasus, resulted in collaboration with more than ten of traditional manufacturers. The collection was first shown at KIASMA Museum of Contemporary Art in Finland in 2012. All designs: COMPANY (Aamu Song & Johan Olin)
