  • Nationality South Korea
  • Duration 2018.09~2019.01

Yu YongYe became a photographer after studying design. Since 2012, she has lived on Gapado Island, off Jeju, discovering the value of anthropologically recording haenyeo diver and island culture and producing an ongoing series of records and photographic works.

By establishing direct relationships between islands, island dwellers and the sea, Yu observes the characteristics and changes of the natural life force inherent in humans. Through embodied cognition, she captures these phenomena as photographs and installation video documentaries. She is currently in the process of becoming a haenyeo on Gapado.

Since her first solo exhibition, 《Grandmothers’ Sea》 at Jeonju International Photo Festival in 2015, Yu’s work has appeared at numerous shows and venues including 《Narratives of Islands and Wind》, 《Island-Island》, 《Fingerprints of Time - Father’s Room》, 《Gaga - Listen to the Song of Home》 and 《Привет》.

From 2015 to 2018, Yu took part as a teacher in Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) photography classes in Russia, Cambodia, Mongolia and Vietnam. In 2018, she joined the residency program at Jeju Foundation for Arts & Culture’s Art Space IAa.
